Thanks Bill for your help, I have made the control source a form property and it is working better, but my solution came when I had to change all references to the control source variable, I rediscovered a forgotten bit of cleanup code in one of the other objects on the page which was resetting my combobox after I had set it! Oh well ... Thanks again.
