I didn't think you could have a variant field type, but could be wrong.
IAC, the following is a SWAG. All vfp vars are variants. Since vfp is weakly typed all the vars have to be variant, they take on the type of the data assigned to them. This is why you can freely change the vars data type without errors.
I tried to get the debugger to display one yesterday but couldn't.
