I had a good sized WAN at my last job. I had a production report that was to be delivered to each desktop, 8 cities streching 1500 miles wide.
Tricks I used:
1) Local exe on the workstation
2) update of data nightly in regularly hit tables
3) check to see if there was new data at HQ and give user ability to decide which to use.
4) also check of update to local exe
5) have routers ajdusted to pass DATA with a passion.
This was for monthly reporting of attorney production in a large law firm. Exe was over 8 meg and had toooooooo many reports.
This data changed infrequently so the update at night was a good fix here.
Everything was done via SQL Selects. No Use my_table anywhere.
