David,
I've had a lot of problems with this issue also. There doesn't seem to be a real concrete answer as to the cause or fix. The most common suggestions I got had to do with corrupt or unavailable printer drivers. One suggested that when the driver was installed it was setup to use the driver on the server, and maybe it became corrupt or was unavailable at the time. My problem turned out to be the brilliant hardware person at my users site. He ran a service pack on their Win95 machine to get them to version 95.a. The problem was that they were already on version b! The changes between a and b involved printer driver interface issues and caused that error every time they tried to print. Funny that Word printed fine, though.

Good Luck,
Marcus.

Clearly if HP Laserjet 5SI on novell captured port lpt2 is the default you cannot print on HP Laserjet 8000PS novell captured on lpt3. Something strange is that problem does not popup when my default is change to LPT3 and try to print on LPT2 (so PS to PCL).
