From your original description of your objective I would say you do NOT want SDF format. SDF format would make each output field the same size as its *defined* source field and you say you want a single space separating each field *only* for the length of the content (not definition) of the field.
I guess an alternative way to describe SDF is that there will be *NO* spaces between any two fields which have one of those fields completely filling the defined length while other fields may have several blanks between them when the fields are SHORTER than the defined length.
