The only thing I can do is to repeat again that it's reasonable (as long as required :-) to create such UDF-ed index on cursor and have it as long as cursor exists (within some form?). The cursor is always open (by definition).
Also, I can tell you that I really saw tables indexed on UDF permanently. I never do it myself, because IMHO it's not a good practice, but it's doable. Honestly, I saw them in FPW days, but I guess it's still the same, also I try to index a cursor this way (when I gave you the first reply) and it worked OK.
