That's actually very frequent, especially in areas of low population density, where a zip code covers hundreds of square miles (parts of Alaska come to mind, not to mention APO/FPO addresses) and in urban areas where a number of small townships have become absorbed into a larger entity (there's one zip code in the New Haven area that's referred to by 4 different names.)
