A REG file is a text version of parts of the registry tree. Double clicking on them in Explorer causes the file to be installed in the registry. In REGEDIT select the tree you want to save to a REG file and select Registry then Export Registry File.

Most often I've used this to swap back and forth between a few different Field Mapping settings in VFP on different projects.
