Right now I'm developing a SQL Server app with VFP on the front end. I'm using SPT to run strored procedures on the server for all updates, inserts, selects, etc. In the past I've used Views, but prefer this way much more. I'm also keeping a local VFP DBC on the client for data that doesn't change much. IMHO, this is the way to go for client server.
