At this time, I'm calling my id generator a couple times and checking after the fact for duplication. I've thought of a couple different ways to do this better.
1) split the identifier into parts, call the id generator for the individual parts and then concattenate them.
2) concatenate a machine name identifier with the generated id
#2 is easier and it gives an immediate track of where a part was processed, but it you use all digits, you need to include some logic to eliminate duplicates when they coincide ie: 23 + 24 = 2324, 2 + 324 = 2324
