I've spoken to the people at Methods Bay a number of times and wanted to share some of the things I know about Infraset and to clarify things here a bit.

1st, Infraset is based entirely on COM. You use instances of its objects and actually have to compile your instances of its objects as COM objects in order to use them in your applications. Given the fact that Infraset is totally n-tier, this makes sense, but it's quite a bit different than how most developers would use a business object from VFE, MM or CB for example.

2nd, Infraset is built using inheritance. Many of the COM objects that are part of the framework were created by using instances of other COM components in the framework. One often overlooked fact about VB is that you can use inheritance, it just requires that you first create COM objects.

3rd, Infraset does not include source code. This is quite a bit different from all of the VFP frameworks and raises a number of issues that I won't get into. Methods Bay is willing to consider allowing others to purchase the source code, but at a price much steeper than the $1450 starting price. (The product is written in VB.)

4th, Infraset is not a VB framework. It's a COM framework that's suitable for use in VB. Since it's a COM framework, it's actually suitable for Web Development, C++, Delphi and probably even VFP. Basically Infraset should work in any environment that supports COM.

5th, as pointed out here, the framework does very little to deal with the UI. This has been discussed here, and it is not necessarilly an issue, but as mentioned, this also makes it quite a bit different from VFP frameworks.

6th, in terms of an object model, the InfraSet object model is very rich and has a number of objects in it that I haven't seen in VFP frameworks but there are also a number of objects I've seen in VFP frameworks that aren't in Infraset, so I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that it has a richer object model or is more n-tier than something like VFE, MM or CB.

The product looks very intriguing and I would certainly think it's worth a look, particularly for shops that have developers using multiple languages that need to access the same data and business objects.
