Call it lame, but I generally use the Microsoft Media Player for this. A free installation, and the ability to add extra codecs mean that it's virtually limitless in what it can do.
One rule of thumb: when testing it against a particular format, make sure that you can run the movie in the player directly, before you try it in the application. You will find out sooner if/when it doesn't work, and you will be able to fix the problem more easily.
