Currently all of the tables that I work with have primary keys whose values have real-world meaning. I plan to add a field to each table with an integer data type (meaningless and invisible to the user) and use that as the primary key. My question is what is the best way to assign new values to this field. They obviously haveto be unique and positive... would there be a problem with (in the conversion process) simply making the key value equal to the record number in the table? Is there a standard or more preferrable way of doing this?
