Can anyone please help with this? Urgent!!!!

When i use the command

mcomp = thisform.txtcompany.value
Update company set company = mcomp
=tableupdate(.T.)

I get an error 'Update Conflict'

The problem is the variable gets passed over as a numeric field thus
giving the error. Why does it do that?
How can i fix this?
