I think the assertion that MS dropped Java because "XML is the future of web computing" is ridiculous. In most cases, the two have nothing to do with one another, and are no mutually exclusive.
Possibly they are referring to the new "Scripting Component" model that lets you define a COM object in an XML file with VBScript, or any other scripting language.
