IE5.01 would hard crash my machine anytime I tried to open a link in a new window. I got these remedies over in the IE MVP group:

Go to start/run and type

regsvr32 shdocvw.dll

then

regsvr32 shdoc401.dll

Test the 'open in new window' again.

If Mark's suggestion doesn't help, clean boot and then go to Control Panel, Add/ move programs,
Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools and choose Repair Internet Expl er.
