>I have been asked to look into finding a faster computer for a VFP system. Currently, it takes almost 2 days to run a task [multiple tables, up to 3 million records in some of the tables] on a dual pentium 500 Mhz. Does anyone know how much faster this might run on a SUN 5000? [I already asked about optimizing the code and they think they have done everything they can. I don't know anything about the system -- they just have to cut the processing time.]

They think? Hmm... suspisious.

Well, My question would be... how would you run VFP on the SUN? There is no Sun version of VFP.

Also, I don't think the Dual processor is used by VFP, it only does one thing at a time, so only uses one thread. You may want to look at trying your process on a Athlon 700 or such.

Is the data on the PC which is processing it? You don't want Network throughput to slow you down here.

What else is the server doing?

Have you looked at the data subsystem... I/O is probably the major speed problem here, more than CPU speed.

Also, what about memory? The more memory VFP has, the faster it will go.

Good luck to ya!
