Thanks, that works. I was not clear on the meaning of clear all marked messages... Perhaps if it read "Delete Marked Messages" ... I think what confused me is that I tried it once and the mailbox icon on the left was not updated to reflect the change so I natually assumed that was not the button that I was looking for.
