Yep, CNMI was part of the US Trust Territory formed after WWII...actually the capitol was here (and one area is still called "Capitol Hill").
No, all the territories don't have the same status...Guam, 120 miles south of here, has a different arrangement...not sure if there are any other countries that are a commonwealth. Am. Samoa is not, I know.
