As Ed said, you can store the preference somewhere (table, ini, or registry) and re-set it at runtime as described. You can do the same for other things like position, height, width, as well, which you can pick up at closing.
I prefer a local table myself (a little simpler) for most if this information (and especially when I get locked out of the registry :), but all these methods are valid.
