When I had that problem I needed to hide 6 columns, so the line at the end of the grid (I tried that too..) was very noticeable. I hope that VFE 7 grids can accept a width of -1 meaning that they should dissapear.
BTW if you have your removes and adds in methods in your form (or presentation object) it would be very reusable...
