When connected to the network, and the shares, and I unplug the network cable, the drives become unavailable (even though they are on the same machine). The laptop also disappears from its own network neighborhood. Why is this? Is there anyway around it? Is there a reason that I can't map to a local share without being connected to another machine?

No domain. I just made sure that both machines were in the same workgoup.
