The only suggestions I can give, as one who has now taken both of the Beta exams, is that when taking the Distributed exam, be sure you know about all there is to know about COM objects, registration, and manipulations, as well as being very familiar with all the nuances of SQL and querys. It seem that this exam places a heavy emphasis on these two items.
As for the desktop applications exam, it seemed pretty well straight forward to me, and has very little SQL or COM stuff (we went to ColdFusion, so I had a hard time with COM)
