For the life of me I can't remember any solution that I may have posted. To the best of my knowledge there's no way restore a backup to a server that has a different character set and/or sort order.

If you have access to your customer's computer, you can have the SEM generate a script to recreate the database objects. Then you can use BCP to pull the data out.
