Wayne, you suggested that I didn't need all of the parenthesis. I had tried that without first and it didn't work.

Jim Booth thought that the periods(.) around the OR statement might be the issue. Removing those did not help.

Ed Rauh had the winning and working solution:

ntest=SQLExec(nHandle, "select ContHist.RecID from ContHist where ContHist.ResultCode in ('COM','QFY')", "ThisCursor")
