Dennis,
As George told you already you can collect all XLS and DOC files. As far as I know there is no way of knowing if they're password protected w/o an attempt to open them. ie: Word has a property called HasPassword but it applies to document object. That is, to query it first you must have a document open. A document might not be open for other reasons too.
I think you need another approach and dig word, excel formats to see where it hides protection info (I won't till I need it). Then you can just check it with lowlevel functions w/o using automation. Also check Office forums on inet where there may be better answers.
