Walter,

>Wim,

>>Hmm VB with access is the most chosen development platform in most projects i participate in. Not the best choice IMHO but it's a simple fact.
>
>What is your experience about these projects ? Are they succesfull ?
Well, yes but (ofcourse there is a but ;-) If the app is in production and data gets large, performance drops like hell. Allso system crashes are not nice to see. (data corruption and database corruptions) i've seen a 30.000 entry database wait for 2 minutes for a subset selection. VFP does a much better job (ofcourse)

>>>>I do agree that the product is a part of visual studio and is THE tool for me and the company. Only those F*.. managers should need that knowledge.
>>>
>>>Of course you can state that VFP is the best choice between MS access and SQL-server. And even using SQL server VFP would shine.
>>
>>I agree 100% with you. The problem is simply the media exposure VFP gets in comparison with VB.
>
>Like someone else said here on the UT. After some projects failings with Access and VB, VFP gets more attenttion than lets say two years ago. Hopefully this is a trend.
True, but the reluctancy to use VFP is also high. The reason: managers not familiar with VFP as a core microsoft product. Programmers see a lot in VFP though.

>
>>>I can only refer to the following dutch companies who use VFP in their products:
>>>- Accountview, developed by ridit(?)
>>Audit soft systems in Amsterdam. (I have build numerous applications with Accountview as backend accounting software). These guys are good and the product is great. (unfortunately the VFP version of accountview is been build by just 1 guy there, and he is from another firm, not a employee.
>
>Hmmm. can it be that the company was called Ridit a few years ago? I've not seen the VFP version yet. Is it good ?
>
>>>- Exact Software uses add ons written in FP/VFP
>>Ouch, this one is outdated. The little pieces of code still in FP is comming from the Grote beer division and is beeing outfased.
>
>Exact software them self seem going to be phased out.... :-). I talked to a distributer of Exact software and they're going for Navision.

hehehe Thought so. Exact is crapware. hundred of pieces of software glued together. I've seen the 1.1 for windows, it had C++, VB FP code mixed toghether and a LOT of bugs.

>
>>>- Grote Beer has written numerous applications within VFP.
>>Yeah, worked with it in '96. Some piece of bugware. Got it to crash in 20 minutes after installation. They wanted to move to delphi at that time. don't know if they did.
>
>Nope. A colleage is a distribitor of Grote Beer software. IT's still written in VFP. Though it's still kind of slow.
As is the case in many poorly written VFP programs. I've been doing code/program optimalisation on the project that i am currently working on. Results are dramatic. Added some indexes and with...endwith code. result is 500 - 1000 % performance improve.

>
>>>- DSB and Delta Lloyd uses FPW/VFP systems for decision support
>>Hehehe, Yeah true. They asked me to work for them half a year ago. they wanted to port from FP to VFP. Didn't pay enough ;-)
>
>How much did they pay? The paid about 110 for me about two years ago. I've worked for Delta Lloyed for about three months. What a pain... Most of the developer do not have the qualities to make it to VFP. The whole culture within the FP/VFP department is sick.

I did not work there. I asked 165 an hour (beginning of this year). They were willing to pay 120 max.

>
>For DSB it is even worse. I've been there once because it's main office is about 10 minutes away from here. They still use DBASEIII compliant code to program their applications:
>Using the project manager to compile project ??, Rushmore ?? never heard of it !
Grin. True in most of the VFP projects i worked on. First thing i always do is redesign the indexi. Gives immidiate results and low investment :-)

>
>>I know why. The only 2 positive users are Audit soft and Delta Lloyd.
>
>I'm also a positive user of it. As a Independant consultant (the programming type), I've developed numerous VFP applications for example for Justitie en de KNZB.
Well, there are more users in the Netherlands ;-) i was talking about standard software solutions.

>
>>>By the way..., Heerde, where is that on the dutch map ??
>>Grin, Its between Zwolle and Apeldoorn.
>
>Hmmm. I used to visit this region quite frequently (apeldoorn en Almelo). Maybe we meet someday. After all the dutch VFP world isn't that big.

Hmmm Yeah, why not. I am currently working in Amsterdam at the GAK building at the staalmeesterslaan (for a subcompany called Viaprisma) They have a standard application wich is being updated every half year, so plenty of work at this time.

Also i am in the proces of starting a new company. The company i now have is with a buisiness partner and 10 programmers, but i disagree with the policy so i'm bailing out. I think we should continue this discussion by email?

Groetjes,
Wim.
