Not proposing this as a solution (flying off at a tangent :-)) but doesn't the Alpha have some clever realtime X68 emulation software? It might be from Digital?

I remember reading an article in MSJ by Matt Pietrik involving some debugging that was being mobbed by this stuff patching the X86 code.
