yes - with manual transactions, quite a number of T-SQL statement will automatically start a transaction. The "MANUAL" setting refers to the fact that you must manually commmit or revert them - not that you get to manually start them. I know it is a bit confusing. The T-SQL docs give a list of what actions start a transaction.
