Well, as one time leader of the local FP user group I know several programmers who gave up, including my partner of 10 years! OK, so you gotta be smarter. But there are only so many "smart" people available. (FWIW I think at lot of the good people here on UT are close to "genius" class).
I would reckon that there would be many more "not so smart" people hacking away at VB. They're the ones who are going to start looking around for something simpler if it gets too hard.
As Craig B said, though, this is not so likely to happen since M$ don't want to loose the sales base.
