You can try Wall Data RUMBA Software they have very good conectivity tools for the mainframe.

I been working on a system that does the same pull data from the main frame to text files and the covert them to VFP tables or any SQL table type, and I tell you it is very easy to convert the text files into data using VFP without the need of any third party software.

Also after the data has been updated by the user is sent back to the Main Frame using the RUMBA activeX controls. It is beautiful!
