If you're experienced with C, there's excellent coverage of the APIs in Windows 98 Developer's Handbook by Ezzell and Blaney (Sybex) and Windows NT Win32 API SuperBible by Simon (Waite Press). VFP is not well-suited to doing lots of things involving direct API calls because of speed and overhead issues, and VFP forms and controls do not operate in standard Windows fashion in many circumstances.
