There are boards that will allow you to place tremendous amounts of RAM on the systemboard, but depending on the chipset and processor, you can (and often will) hurt performance by putting too much RAM on the board. A good example would be Slot1 processors (PII/PIII) and motherboards - while the board may support a large amount of RAM, Slot1 processors will only cache memory in L2 cache in the first 512MB. The Xeon processors and boards based on the 440GX, 450NX and other server chip[sets can support up to 4GB. Putting too much memory on a Slot1 Pentium II is especailly bad under NT, since NT grabs memory top- down, so the first stuff allocated won't be cacheable.
