I have not done any benchmarks comparing VFP with SQL Server, so my opinion is strictly based on experiential observation.

SQL Server 6.5 and earlier were dogish in performance
SQL Server 7.0 is order of magnitude better
VFP is fast, has always been fast

When I face teh decision of whether to design a system with SQL Server or VFP native data, that decision is no longer based on performance differences. The performance of both approaches is perfect fine for me. The decision is based on many other issues. Working for many different cleints with different situations I tend to use them both because neither of them is the "right" choice for everything.
