That was my first guess too, then I started confusing myself by thinking that since bandwidth would be a bottle neck, maybe if the changes were written as the processing occured, the modem would have a chance to "catchup" instead of being forced to do it all at the end.
Some day, when I am rich and famous, I'll set up a test.
