You can send a file to printer in old fashion (DOS) in a dos session with command like : myfile.doc > lpt2 but in this case you also print all header infos of the file and your printed document will be full of funny faces and other wierd characters.
Two exceptions:
1st- text only (of course).
2nd- if you have print into a file. You can set your printer driver to a file in place of lpt2. When you want to print it, just send it directly to the printer: myfile.prn > lpt2
ex. At your office you have a color printer. At home you can install the driver for this printer and print to a file. You save this file on a floppy and at your office you send it directly to the printer. In this case you dont need to have the application installed to the computer for print the document.
BTW you don't have to open the application prior to print it. You can drag and drop your file on the printer icon (or select 'print' on the context menu) and the associate application will start, print the doc and shutdown after the print.
I hope this help ;-)
