>Both yes. Again, let's not forget that majority of businesses today are Small to Medium scales which have budget constraint. Another thing is that, it is hard to do off-the-shelf applications using Server based databases. As a software development company, we aim two birds to fall in one stone : VFP to accomodate small, medium, and large scale businesses.
Jess,
This business, software development, is changing constantly. The tools available are changing. It was once true that using Clietn/Server approach to data management was expensive, but today, with MSDE available, it is no longer a valid reason not to use Client/Server approach. The direct mapping of MSDE to SQL Server provides a clear migration path for scalability over time. There is no clear migration path for VFP native data.
Also, I see many people refer to the size of the business as dictating the system to be built. However, does a small company need any less robust security on its data than a large company does? The level of security needed is a result of the nature of the business and the system under development and has nothing to do with the size of the company.
We cannot afford to determine a set of criteria for making our decisions and then never review the issue. Too much changes too fast to take that road.
