>I think the time has come up here to institute some form of self policing in regards to the abundance of information being presented that could possibly lead novice developers a stray in regards to the use of current technology.

Hmmm. We'll have to be careful here. I think it could become to easy for this to become a popularity contest. I know that there have been more than a few threads (some in the past day or two) where I would be tempted to label them technically meritless, but on further inspection, I just disagree with the standpoint of the poster. Sometimes though, this line gets to thin to recognize, and I am sure that I could be convinced to change my mind on the technical merit of the post if I just gave the thread more time. But it might be too late- after I label the thread useless, potentially valuable contributors might not bother reading it.

>For every few nuggets of valuable info I find up here on a daily basis, I also seem to find twice as many nuggets of misinformation.

Really? Useless information, yeah, but misinformation, while it does happen, doesn't seem THAT common to me.

>Add in the fact that many people seem to post just for the sake of seeing their name show up on the list,

I totally agree here.

>plus consideration for the fact that the rapid pace of changing technology can be hard to keep up with... I think it would be incredibly useful to have a mechanism where the general UT public could vote on the technical merit of a thread. This would hopefully eliminate 15 different people posting a response disagreeing with someone's suggestion. Ideally 1 person could voice the disagreement and the other 14 could vote the post lacks technical merit.

I might be more receptive to the idea if it was aimed more at highlighting the really valuable threads and messages, rather than trashing the 'invaluable' ones. Makes it a little tougher for people to get their feelings hurt. I don't know, maybe I beling to the John Koziol "over'sensitive" club, but it makes me uncomfortable to see anyone belittled, flamed, or deemed technically meritless (I know the suggestion is to vote on messages, but it wouldn't be long before the stigma was tied to the poster).

Steven Black suggested something similar a while back. I think that his suggestion would basically allow a message to be voted out of existence, or voted into a "useful" hall of fame. I really like the idea, and it would help me save time too, but this feature is one that needs careful consideration before implementation.
