I am sure there is a perfomance impact of using a transaction. However, since a trnasaction is the ONLY thing that will provide an all or none operation across multiple tables there really isn't much choice. When you need atransaction you have to pay the price no matter what it is. In my informal observations what ever performance difference there is is small (of course this assumes the correct usage of a transaction).
