The only thing to add is that I only experienced this problem you're having with a small app where the tables were opened locally. Besides removing the DBC from the project, now that I took a look at the app, I also moved the DBC/table opening to the main PRG, and the problem disappeared.
In my larger apps, the problem never surfaced, since there is always an entire separate top-level module that gets system entry info and opens the correct DBCs/tables before any detailed forms are opened. Hence, a huge number of forms and grids, and not so much as a single problem converting these apps.
As to whether MS vfp team is trying to phase out SQL/QPR sources, your guess is as good as mine :) I wouldn't be totally shocked by it, though, the emphasis is on using views and coded cursors now...
