>There are HUGE companies that provide this service. GEIS (General Electric Information Services), Premenos, Harbinger and so forth. I helped a startup create a PC-based solution at www.eccompany.com and notwithstanding some really disgusting internal political garbage I still think they have the best of all solutions. They not only did EDI but ACH as well and for around US$1,000.00 per installation whereas the "typical" EDI solution back in 1996 was around US$100,000.00!

Just another observation on EDI. To say its days are numbered would be an overstatement, because its pretty entrenched. But any company currently looking for a data interchange solution, would be stupid to pass up XML, and many companies and industries currently using EDI are preparing to or have already begun to develop an alternate solution using XML (it has its own built in transformation language: XSL). Frameworks and standards like BizTalk and OASIS are the future of interapplication data exchange, and I think EDI will quickly come to be seen an "Legacy". FWIW, the EDI standard has already begun work on an XML version of EDI...
