So far, I could not identify any specific reason. It just happens sometimes, especially if form is crammed with grids. Though, I've found one particular situation when unlinking of recordsource was the only workaround I could find. It happened if:
1. Form has many pages with grid on some of them.
2. Some of pages, besides a grid, have a button that launches report form preview command.
3. Report form itself is based on some other cursor, e.g. result of Select-SQL.
Now the result is really bizarre: when you open preview first time, it's perfect, but if you zoom and then un-zoom it, then report loses its cursor, raises error message ('Cannot Find Variable ...') and closes.
As I said, the only workaround I found was to un-link grid recordsource right before REPORT FORM ... and re-link back after.
