Another option that may be less radical AFA retrofitting would be to simply map the drive oon the fly as required on the way in and out of the application. You can use the Win32API to handle this (WNetAddConnection/WNetCancelConnection) or use an automation object (as usual, I'm fond of Wscript.Network, part of the WSH.)
I'd be careful with this if you have to drop a mapping in order to reassign it; while you can force the remap, it may have unexpected consequences for other apps that either are using the drive mapping now, or rely on the drive mapping when they start.
