In this case, modifying to UNC to support non-standard drive mappings is cake, since you modify the record for UNC. Then your only concern is if you have multiple servers, and not all users are connected to the necessary ones.

Very likely; I don't know Direct Access, so I can't really say. Since you can write your script in VBScript or JScript (or both) and access virtually any COM Object you like in the script, I can't think of anything that I can do with a batch file I can't do at least as well with Windows Scripting, especially since, if you get stuck, you can always run the old batch file using WScript.Shell, which has a Run method...
