She wants a set of 5 character values. I think she should replace the editbox with a control consisting of a grid linked to an updatable cursor and coordinated with insert and delete buttons. This would allow her to easily control the format of the input. Something like this was already recomended but, she is fond of the editbox and does not want to give it up.
