Hi John,
>Seriously, is anyone on the UT really concerned about Y2K? I wasn't, but I'm starting to get that way.
I'm not too worried about any my apps, or terrorists, but I don't have much confidence in the infrastructure/government here...this is a small island of 60,000 people that depends on the outside world for fuel, food, etc. Most of the drinking water is converted from the salty groundwater, so depends on fuel. I've asked a lot of questions, and the officials are all SO reassuring.
At least we don't depend on heating fuel...but I think the supply of papayas and bananas would run out pretty quickly if the ships stopped coming...
I thought about going somewhere else for the new year, but decided to stick it out and take my chances.
The funniest thing I've heard, though, is that, since Saipan is GMT +10, we will be in the new year/decade/millenium before the US...so we will be reporting our problems, shortly after midnight, to alert the US about possible problems - so they can have advance notice! The gov. here has been bragging about that. Supposedly the White House has a hot line to Guam, to be notified if things go screwy.
Good luck to all....and a very happy and healthy new year. J
