I don't know if GetObject will solve your problem of the user closing their instance of Word. That is almost a whole 'nother problem.

It sounds like you instantiate Word and assign it to a variable. Then the user closes Word, but your app keeps refering to the variable. In which case it seems like you should check the variable.
