>You are right, but the different behavior comes from the different calling environments. While Jim and Ed say that an undeclared variable is, by default, private when it is created. So, if there's no other variable in scope when an undeclared variable is assigned, a new private var is created. The "created" word is the key in this thread! :)

I agree! :) Created is the key here. I was missing Jim's distinction between declaring AND assigning vs. just declaring.
