Umm, I think the latter as in "Duh-Pawl". Actually, Mark, your post brings up another instance of a "Chicagoism" that got turned into something else. This also is true.

Years ago, before the school had a team nickname, the basketball team was simply referred to as (in proper English), "The Men's Team" or "The Men's". This evolved (in good Chicago style) to "Duh Men's" and eventually into the current name, "The Blue Demons".
