The problem is that the default font that Word has for imported text files is Courier 10 - a monospaced font which makes sense for columnar reports received as ASCII text. Obviously, as ASCII text, there are no embedded control characters.
You might want to investigate using Word Automation to get the file formatted for you, either by feeding the data in via a mailmerge, or by directly inserting the text line-by-line into the document after setting some defaults like font and page height and width.
